JR SportBrief: We Cannot Justify College Athletics Right Now

The Big Ten has canceled its non-conference slate this fall, and other conferences could soon follow suit. In fact, many are wondering if this is the beginning of the end for the 2020 college football season.

JR SportBrief believes that is certainly possible.

“How the hell do you actually justify having college athletics?” he asked on CBS Sports Radio. “We know it’s about the cash, but how are you going to justify having college athletics when having students on campus is almost a crap shoot and is going to vary state to state, conference to conference, school to school? It’s impossible. So there is no easy solution. There is no solution right now – and if there is no solution, I have no idea how we’re going to have a college football season. The only thing for certain is uncertainty. The NFL, the NCAA, they’re all just going to have to fall in line.”

Sports league all across America – and the world – would like to return to play. Some have already tried, albeit with mixed results.

“Everybody wants to play, but is it the right move?” JR asked. “I don’t think so. I believe if we are actually going to do the right thing, if we are not just going to base it on finances and economics – and I understand people need to work. I understand that. There are a lot of jobs that are attached to every single league and conference, every single school, but college athletics is not necessary. We can cancel it. We can delay and delay and delay, and I’m an advocate for that: continue to delay. Don’t try to force things just to appease or just try to make some money. Actually do something that’s right for the students.

“I know we can play around it, and it’s necessary, and we shouldn’t run, and we shouldn’t fear,” JR continued. “But here’s the question: is it necessary? I say no. It’s very simple.”
