The 2020 college football season is very much in doubt, as major conferences scramble to decide when to start, who to play, and what to do when COVID-19 inevitably rears its ugly head.

All of which is to say that the College Football Playoff, if it happens, could be the craziest playoff in the seven-year history of the event.

“I think the SEC is actually more likely to get two teams in now because you’re going to rely more heavily on the eye test because there’s nothing else to compare these teams to each other with,” CBSSports.com and CBS Sports HQ college football analyst Barrett Sallee said on Tiki & Tierney. “And so, you know when you look at SEC teams via the eye test, you see NFL players everywhere. They are everywhere. It’s going to be nearly impossible to really determine which teams are the best teams in the country. I don’t know if the playoff committee makes changes to it . . . but it’s going to be an interesting time. It’s going to be a very weird fall.”

The playoff semifinals – the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl – are slated for Jan. 1, 2021, with the championship to follow Jan. 11 in Miami. Sallee, though, has an idea for the powers that be to ponder.

“Why not push the semifinals back to mid-January and play the national championship game the week before the Super Bowl? Or the Saturday of the Super Bowl?” he asked. “It wouldn’t start at 9 o’clock on a Monday night, either. Start it at like 7 o’clock on a Saturday night or 6 o’clock on a Saturday night the week before the Super Bowl. Everybody would watch.”
