Erik Coleman Not Mad About Jets Seahawks Jamal Adams Trade

When the New York Jets traded Jamal Adams to the Seattle Seahawks in July, Erik Coleman was initially disappointed.

“Being a former safety and a guy who knows Jamal, I’m a big fan of his, so I was disappointed to see him go,” the Jets TV analyst said on Tiki & Tierney. “But at the same time, I understand. After a certain line is crossed, there’s no coming back. Once you start talking about the coach and the owner and things like that, you become a distraction to the team. No team is going to deal with a distraction in the locker room. I don’t care how good you are.”

Adams, the sixth overall pick in 2017, was a highly productive player for the Jets. He had 12.0 sacks, 28 tackles for loss, 25 passes defended, six forced fumbles, two interceptions and 23 QB hits in three seasons with New York.

He will be missed, but getting a pair of first-round picks, among other assets, in the trade will certainly cushion the blow.

“You look at what they received for that trade, you can’t be mad at that,” Coleman said. “They have two very good safeties in [Bradley] McDougald and Marcus Maye is emerging. He was in the shadow of Jamal Adams, but I think Marcus Maye can be a Pro Bowl safety in his own right.”

The Jets also drafted Cal safety Ashtyn Davis in the third round of the NFL Draft.

“I think he’s going to be a guy who really does contribute a lot in their dime packages and probably plays some base defense as well,” Coleman said. “Gregg Williams is a master at doing the most with whatever he has, so I think he’s going to put those guys in a great position. I think Marcus Maye is going to come out this year and have a great year, and the defense is going to be solid.”

The Jets ranked second in the league in rushing defense (86.9 yards per game allowed) last season but were 17th in passing defense (236.2) and 23rd in sacks (35).

They open the season on the road against Buffalo on Sept. 13.
