Since winning the Super Bowl with Peyton Manning, the Denver Broncos have had a revolving door at quarterback. From Brock Osweiler to Trevor Siemian, from Paxton Lynch to Case Keenum – and who could forget Joe Flacco? – it hasn’t always been pretty in Denver. In fact, it’s almost never been pretty.

But it could be with Drew Lock.

Has John Elway finally found his quarterback?

“Yes, John Elway has his man at quarterback,” former Broncos offensive lineman Ryan Harris said on The Zach Gelb Show. “It would be easy for a guy who goes 4-1 at the end of a season to feel like he’s got it figured out, and even before he got the playbook officially, he was working with all the offensive players, asking questions to Pat Shurmur, the offensive coordinator, and that’s how high-caliber quarterbacks perform. 

“In addition to that, a good indication of how a quarterback is handling things is if they can change the snap count,” Harris continued. “I know it sounds kind of funny, but if you can’t run an offense on one, you’re definitely not going to be able to do it with a double cadence and/or on the quick count. I saw all three of those cadences throughout each practice I’ve been to at training camp. That shows a mastery.”

Lock, a second-round pick in 2019, completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 1,020 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions in five games last season.

The Broncos finished 28th in both total offense and scoring offense (17.6 points per game) last season but signed Melvin Gordon in free agency and spent their first two draft picks on Jerry Jeudy and K.J. Hamler to complement Courtland Sutton. The offense should be better in 2020, especially with Shurmur calling plays.

“One of the things about Pat Shumur’s offense, one coach [told] me it’s so simple it’s stupid,” Harris said. “Well, that’s how you win. You know exactly what great teams are going to do because they’re very good at it and they do it all the time. His formations are going to help [Lock] with his pre-snap reads. So in addition to his tenacity in the offseason and feeling like he still has more to prove, leading the team and running the huddle and the line of scrimmage with different cadences, Drew Lock is the quarterback for the Denver Broncos.”
