Hairston Jr.: Carlos Correa, Astros “haven’t done anything”

The Houston Astros swept the Minnesota Twins in the Wild Card this week, prompting Astros shortstop Carlos Correa to talk a little smack to Houston’s haters.

In fact, Correa thinks the Astros, by virtue of winning a three-game playoff series, proved the doubters wrong.

Did they?

“No, they haven’t done anything,” World Series winner and SportsNet LA analyst Jerry Hairston Jr. said on Reiter Than You. “You win a series against the Minnesota Twins, a team that hasn’t won a postseason game since the Kirby Puckett era, you did nothing. Everybody knows you [were] proven to cheat. Everybody knows that.”

The Astros finished with a losing record (29-31) this season but beat the Twins 4-1 in Game 1 and 3-1 in Game 2 of their Wild Card playoff series. They play Oakland in the ALDS on Monday.

“Carlos Correa is a very talented player, incredible player,” Hairston said. “What I don’t understand is they continue to double down, triple down, on this thing. If they could just be quiet and try to let this thing go – which, it’s not going to go away. Once the fans come back in the stands, fans aren’t going to forget. It’s not just the Dodgers fans. What about the Oakland A’s fans? The Angels fans? The fans in your division that you’re going to have to deal with next year and in years to come?

“So if they think this is going away, it’s not,” Hairston continued. “Baseball players and baseball fans have long memories. I think it’s going to be even worse for them next year because the fans didn’t get a chance to address it this season. They will definitely address it next year and in years to come. They keep bringing it up as players, which is shocking to me. The best they can do is [say], ‘Hey, we messed up, we made a mistake, hopefully people forgive us and we can move on.’ I don’t understand why he doesn’t say that. For Carlos to continue to [talk about this], that’s surprising to me.”
