After squandering a 24-0 lead to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC divisional playoffs this past January, the Houston Texans have, well, struggled. They made several head-scratching moves in the offseason, including trading DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona, and started the season 0-4 before firing head coach and general manager Bill O’Brien.

On Wednesday, former NFL executive Amy Trask offered some advice to Texans owner Cal McNair as he searches for a new head coach and GM.

“Do a very, very broad search, an inclusive search, [and] speak to any number of people before honing in on one,” Trask said on The DA Show. “In other words, don’t rush to judgment. You’ve had some stumbles and bumbles along the way. You’ve made some questionable decisions along the way. Take a little bit of time. You do have a head start to start thinking because you were the first team to relieve your coach of duty. I think Cal McNair should reach out to some very smart, capable people around the league, to some other team owners, some other team GMs – which he would have to then do with owner [approval] – and learn what it is he should be looking for.”

The Texans have been a consistent franchise over the years and have made the playoffs in four of the last five seasons. On the plus side, they have franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson under contract through 2025. On the down side, they don’t have a lot of financial flexibility.

Is this an appetizing job for potential head coaches?

“I view every one of the 32 jobs as appetizing jobs because there are only 32 of them,” Trask said. “Sure, some may be more glamorous than others; some may be more enticing than others from a roster standpoint. But at the end of the day, there’s only 32 of these jobs in the world, and there’s a lot more than 32 people that want them. So if you look at it simply in terms of supply and demand, I think they’re all appetizing.”

The Texans (3-7), who are 3-3 since firing O’Brien, play the Lions (4-6) in Detroit on Thanksgiving. Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m. ET.
