Tucker: Super Bowl or bust for Sean McVay Matthew Stafford

The Lions and Rams authored a blockbuster deal Saturday, as Los Angeles agreed to send Jared Goff, two first-round picks and a third-round pick to Detroit for Matthew Stafford, who will orchestrate Sean McVay’s offense.

Is Stafford/McVay a match made in heaven?

“It’s a match made in heaven for people like me, who don’t like when people have lazy narratives and don’t like when people have built-in excuses,” former NFL offensive lineman and current analyst and podcast host Ross Tucker said on After Hours with Amy Lawrence. “So, forever it’s been, ‘Well, Stafford’s really good. It’s just the Lions organization [is the problem].’”

Stafford, the No. 1 overall pick in 2009, has made the playoffs three times in his career, losing in the Wild Card each time, most recently in 2016. McVay, meanwhile, led the Rams to the Super Bowl in 2018 – his second season as an NFL head coach – but has just one playoff win over the last two seasons.

“Every time the Rams had a good game offensively, all we did was praise Sean McVay. Anytime the Rams had a bad game offensively, [we said], ‘Jared Goff sucks,’” Tucker said. “That’s not equitable. When the offense is good, you got to give some of the credit to Jared Goff, and when the offense is bad, you got to give some of the blame to Sean McVay. Now there’s no excuse for McVay. He’s got Matthew Stafford. That’s his hand-picked guy.

“And conversely for Matthew Stafford, he’s not in some bad franchise,” Tucker continued. “The Rams have made the playoffs in three of the last four years, McVay is this boy wonder – blah, blah, blah. So I like that neither one of those guys have any built-in excuses anymore. It’s kind of put up or shut up now for those guys. I don’t mean just this year, but over the next couple of years it’s Super Bowl or bust.”
