Boxing legend Bernard Hopkins dropped by CBS Sports Radio to discuss Deontay Wilder’s upcoming fight with Luis Ortiz at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Nov. 23, among other topics. Wilder beat Ortiz in March 2018, scoring a TKO in the 10th round.

Hopkins doesn’t think the rematch will last that long.

“I like Wilder,” Hopkins said on Ferrall on the Bench. “I think (he’s) going (to win) early. I think that he just happens to have a style that most fighters in that division cannot deal with. He’s sort of unorthodox because it looks like he’s all over the place, but it actually works for him. For me, it would never have worked. But for him, it seems to be something that’s an advantage. I like Wilder. I like Wilder in about a six- or seven-round TKO. . . . It’s a momentum fight going into the next year.”

Hopkins also shared his thoughts on MMA fighters who want to box boxers. Stipe Miocic, for example, wants to box Tyson Fury, while Jorge Masvidal wants to box Canelo Alvarez.

“It’s just like taking NFL players and asking him to play basketball in the NBA,” Hopkins said. “It’s going to be very awkward and uncomfortable. If you go in that arena where you’re not accustomed to, you’re going to feel uncomfortable. An MMA guy in a boxing arena might do well, but he won’t do great. He’ll last a couple of rounds, but that’s it. It’s two different ways of attack and sport amongst each other. 

“When you look at a boxer, it’s more of a technique,” Hopkins continued. “It’s more of a stand-up type of combat. MMA is a whole new different animal. We cannot survive won’t they do, and they cannot survive what we do. To me, it’s a spectacle. It’a show. So when you talk about MMA and boxing and putting these guys together, a spectacle brings in big money. When you talk about a spectacle, a show, great, fine. But if you want to see a boxing match, I advise you . . . to don’t think it’s going to be something (competitive) because it’s two different sports.”
