Tierney: Joe Burrow’s volume was “a recipe for disaster”

Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow tore his ACL and MCL and suffered other structural damage in his left knee Sunday, a brutal end to a promising rookie season.

The No. 1 overall pick was carted off the field in the third quarter of Cincinnati’s 20-9 loss to Washington and will miss the remainder of the year, if not all of next year.

It must have felt like déjà vu for Bengals fans, who know what it’s like to lose a franchise quarterback to a horrific knee injury.

“This happened with Carson Palmer as well,” Brandon Tierney reminded listeners on Tiki & Tierney. “[With Burrow], there is a little bit of blame to go around.”

Burrow finished 22-of-34 for 203 yards, one touchdown and one fumble against Washington. Despite playing with a subpar offensive line, Burrow leads the NFL in attempts (404) and is third in sacks (32).

“Top five in attempts, top five in hits, top five in sacks – it’s a recipe for disaster,” Tierney said.

Tiki Barber agreed.

“It is,” he said. “That’s why everybody is looking to assign blame. Whose fault is this? Is it Zac Taylor? . . . When you get put in that position as many times as Joe Burrow got put in that position – and they played better as of late – but he is constantly under pressure.”

Burrow, who turns 24 in December, thanked fans for their support and words of encouragement in the wake of his injury. Tiki & Tierney both hope the Ohio native can eventually return to action at full strength.

“Horrendous break,” Tierney said. “We’re rooting for the young man. He seems to be in good spirits, but he’s going to have some dark days of rehab and he’s going to plow through it like the champ he is. Hopefully when Joe Burrow gets back on the field, hopefully he’s still Joe Burrow.”
